Visit from a soul in Purgatory

Extract from the biography of my father Jean-Rock Potvin

He wrote his biography approximately 2 years before his death. On the picture shown here, he's 25 years old, He past away on April 6, 1997 at the age of 74 years and 7 months.

A soul from Purgatory comes to request Masses

If I may use such an expression, an important matter concerning a soul from Purgatory came to disrupt my life. Noella and I had been married for 2 years.

The passing away of Albert Fortin

Mario was born on the 7th of September 1950; following two years of parish life and complete happiness. This occurred on the 2nd of November 1950.

During the year 1948, a cousin of Noella named Albert Fortin, died in a car accident that occurred at Chambord, not too far from Desbiens. The car he was travelling in was hit by a train and there were 4 casualties.

I knew Albert Fortin very well. We worked as log-cutters during the Winter months. We had always been very good friends.

Noella asked me if we were going to have a Mass said for the repose of his soul. I replied: "No, if he needs one, he'll come and request one from me." I said this very nonchalantly without even thinking as to what I had just said. And that was it, we didn't discuss it any more.

He died in June or July of 1948. A little more than two years had passed.

Our room was on the second floor. During the night between All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day which is the 2nd of November, Noella and I were awakened by something undefinable, something which we could not explain. Mario, 2 month's old, was sleeping in a bed right beside Noella.

All of a sudden we heard an unwonted noise coming from a small electric stove that Noella used to warm up the baby's milk bottle during the night.. The noise sounded like someone plucking a violin string.

We could not hear the noise caused by the plucking, but only the sound emanating from it. It was something very odd, strange, that we had never heard before. I said to my wife: "Listen, we have never heard anything like this before."

After several such demonstrations on the stove, the same thing occurred under the baby's bed, which had a metal bed spring.

For several minutes and many times, we heard a whistling sound coming from the metal bed spring, without hearing the plucking done to the metal bed spring.

We were not scared. It was unexplainable. All the lights were on, and we looked for an answer to this unexpected phenomenon.

Then, Mario made a sound as if someone had touched him.

Then, I thought of Albert Fortin and the requests for Masses. I told him: "O.K. I'll go tomorrow and have a Mass said for you." Then there was complete silence in the room. I told him: "Nevertheless, I don't want my wife to know about it, nor for you to touch my son. They are completely out of all this. You shall deal only with me. Albert, I said, I've known you very well, I shall never be scared of you."

Those phenomenons kept on for 10 years

And we continued with our lives. This was the 2nd of November 1950. And this kept on for close to ten years. I built a house at the corner of 1291 Hebert and Desbiens Streets; and many a times I got requests for Masses from Albert.

I bricked my house in 1958 and, even then, I could still hear hard blows on the wall of my bedroom. I would wake up and I would ask Noella if she had heard anything. She always replied no. I said to Albert: "If you damage my brick wall you will get no further help from me."

At another time, I heard a massive blow on the floor which caused the candelabrums to sway in the house.

One time, I flicked the lights on to see if the children had heard anything. They were all sleeping soundly.

Around 1960, I woke up and I sat up in my bed. I said to myself, this is not normal, something will happen. All was quiet. There were no cars travelling on the road.

All of a sudden, sitting quietly in my bed, I saw somewhat of a white cloud landing on the pavement in front of the house of Robert Desbiens, my third neighbour. This kind of whitish cloud started to walk towards my house. It walked slowly at first. Once in front of my house, it proceeded on the sidewalk which leads to the stairs of my veranda. And, this whitish cloud entered into my bedroom. It was undefinable. My ears were somewhat plugged, I was incapable of making any movements.

It was an apparition, I would say a cornering apparition that filled the whole room. Before telling him that I would be having a Mass said for him in the morning, I waited a bit to be sure that it was definitively Albert..

And then, after having promised him his Mass, I was assuredly told that this would be the last time that he would visit me. And this was the very last time. Never after this date did I experience an unwonted thing that could make me think that Albert needed Masses. After all this, I've kept a great devotion towards the Souls in Purgatory by having Masses said for them, sometimes as many as thirty consecutive Masses said for one soul during one month. I do not advise any one to invite a soul in Purgatory to come and ask you for Masses. It can come very quickly, you can be sure.
